The JDC and Her Majesties Government of Gibraltar met this week to discuss the future of Junior darts events in the British overseas territory.
This year the JDC held their premium events of the Junior World cup team event, International Open and its final rounds of the Junior World Darts Championship on the rock.
A hugely successful spectacle with over 128 players competing in team and single events.
The Minister for Housing, Infrastructure, Technical Services, Youth and Sport in Gibraltar the Honourable Mr Steven Linares who was present at the event last year, was delighted with the opportunities the JDC offer for youth and junior players and enjoyed the event at the Europa Point facility.
Positive discussions between JDC Chairman Steve Brown and Minister Linares led to a conclusion of long term agreement.
The JDC will be active in putting on tournaments in Gibraltar for the next 6 years.
JDC Chairman Steve Brown commented,
“ a hugely positive meeting has led to a long term relationship in Gibraltar. For the JDC it is a great location strategically and has state of the art facilities perfect for darts tournaments. I am delighted with the outcome. We have had nothing but positive feedback from this years event so it seemed right we discuss the opportunity of returning. Not only that, we feel that due to the rapid growth in the junior game a long term agreement allows us to get to work on making these events and opportunities as best as possible for our players knowing where we will hold them”.
The JDC has also committed its education team to the agreement and will continue with its visits working closely with Schools, College and Youth development programmes. The JDC will also continue to support the Gibraltar Darts Association in building a pipeline of future players coming through the academy system set up in 2019.
Youth Secretary to the GDA Alex Nunez said,
“ The Gibraltar Darts Association is extremely pleased with the agreement, this deal will only enhance and increase both the interest and growth of our game locally. We look forward to the impact this will have on grassroots level. We are also excited about the education visits and the GDA is ready to help and assist the JDC in making a huge success of their visits to Gibraltar.
